Check out my new website for Tzur Yisrael...
The purpose of the website My Hebrew Bible (MHB) is to enable people to have a stronger relationship with their Creator by intently and methodically studying his image which is the scripture.
You can methodically study the word by habitually studying portions of the word which are broken down into portions (see the Parasha tab) and also by thinking how to do the study (see critical thinking, hermeneutics).
You can intently study the word by defining your goals and what it is that you wish to get out of the time you spend in the word. When you have better clarity what your goals are then you can understand your intent.
Another focus of MHB is to see our relation that we have with the Creator in terms of law (covenants/contracts). Consider the following maxim.
"it is through law that your will have great clarity regarding ones religion"
This focus on the law will be brought out in the commentary and the articles that are found on MHB,
In contrast, the focus is not on topics like eschatology, deity pronunciations and the presumed extra biblical authorities that have emanated from the theologies of either Rabbinical Judaism or Marcion/Constantine Christianity.
It is presumed at MHB that our Elohim (Hebrew transliteration of God) is a reasonable Elohim. That our relationship with Elohim is fundamentally covenantal (the sacred contract) and that we can approach Him in a reasonable way because law is reasonable. It is further presumed that we can read and comprehend what scripture requires of us and that we don't need others to interpret for us what is truth.
Paul (Shaul) writes in 2nd Timothy chapter two
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth 2Ti 2:15.
Where does the burden to "study to shew approval" lie regarding this workman of Elohim? isn't it with thyself? Paul doesn't say find someone else to convince you that you have received approval unto God. Two things seems clear from this verse regarding approval from Elohim. First we don't have the authority to delegate this to someone else nor can someone else authoritatively tell us whether or not we achieved the goal.
A fundamental question in law is "by what authority?" (lat. quo warranto). This is an important point to remember when you are challenged on this subject (which you most certainly will). You must be able to articulate your authority. The authority goes beyond merely the right to read the scripture but to do them and have them be a part of every aspect of your life. As Moses says in Deuteronomy chapter 30 to a future generation that the commandments is not hidden, nor can we make an excuse for someone to go get it for us.
11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
The context of these verses can be found in the prior ten verses, which by the way, are prophetic (Deu 30:1-10). The "it" in question is your choice as to whether to choose a blessing or curse.
Why the name My Hebrew Bible
My It is the intent to make your bible yours just like the items found under the My Documents folder on your computer are yours.
If you accept that you are Israel and therefore a nation of priests and kings then the goal is to aid you in fulfilling Deu 17:18-19 (at least at some level) because over time you are making the bible your bible.
Hebrew The focus is to get the English speaking user to know the source of the scripture, so rather than focus on the numerous translations, focus on the Hebrew language.
Bible The most important thing one has is their relatioinship to the Creator and this relatioinship is a covenant. The details of this covenant are found in the bible.
